Revolutionizing Outdoor Art: The Tower 01 Installation
In the heart of Upstate New York, Dutch designer Johannes Offerhaus and The North Face have teamed up to create a stunning kinetic installation, known as the Tower 01. This groundbreaking project not only showcases innovative design but also aims to make outdoor experiences more sustainable by utilizing leftover clothing materials. This collaboration is emblematic of how fashion and functionality can merge to produce remarkable art in nature.
Art Meets Functionality: Create and Collapse
The installation at Storm King Art Center features three swathes of pyramidal fabric suspended from lightweight carbon poles, rising 30 feet high. But what sets Tower 01 apart is its unique collapsibility, allowing it to fit into hiking backpacks. This ingenuity was inspired by the traditional tent systems and ski tour backpacks, which prioritize portability. As Offerhaus explained, "When The North Face designs a tent, they also think about its weight and storage options." He mirrored this design ethos, breaking the installation into manageable sections that can be easily transported.
Utilizing Sustainable Materials for Modern Adventure
Highlighting sustainability, Offerhaus selected his own grey rip-stop fabric for the upper levels of Tower 01, while the lower layer incorporates leftover Spectra polyethylene. This not only serves to promote The North Face's new Hke clothing collection but also emphasizes the importance of recycling and resourcefulness in contemporary design. "I save the majority of my work for later use," Offerhaus notes, underlining his commitment to sustainability.
A New Concept of Shelter: Blurring Lines Between Art and Utility
What started as a shade cover is evolving into a concept for functional tent structures; offerhaus envisions a future where tents aren’t merely utilitarian, but also feel like architectural spaces that harmonize with their surroundings. "Tents are designed from a very utilitarian and functional perspective, but now I want to build tents that feel like architectural spaces, but are still very functional," he explains.
Engagement and Installation: A Short Yet Impactful Experience
The installation process itself is quite streamlined, with the structure set up by a small team in just two hours. This efficiency reflects the practicality and foresight in the design, making it an accessible art piece that invites viewer interaction without excessive resource consumption. It poses questions about how we perceive art, sustainability, and our connection to nature.
