A Coastal Jewel: The Pāvilosta House Redefines Architectural Norms
Latvia's western coast is not just a picturesque beach destination; it's also home to innovative architectural marvels that harmoniously blend with nature. Among these is the recently unveiled Pāvilosta House, designed by local architecture studio Made, which breaks from tradition with its twisting slate roof and a layout that mirrors the undulating sand dunes that dot the coastline.
Design Inspired by Nature
The Pāvilosta House spans an impressive 300 square meters, fulfilling the client’s request for a larger space for family gatherings and guests. The design is a nod to the region's rich traditions, boasting a barn-like form that resonates with local architectural language while experimenting with curves to evoke the coastal environment.
Made partner Linda Krūmiņa emphasizes the house’s unique connection to its surroundings: "It would seem that wind and water have shaped the geometry of the house, just as they eternally shape and transform the Pāvilosta dunes." With that philosophy, the house's design transforms the landscape into a living, breathing element of the architecture.
Innovative Materials and Sustainable Design
Constructed with an emphasis on sustainability, the house features a glue-laminated timber frame that encases panels of cross-laminated timber (CLT). This choice not only maximizes durability but also enhances aesthetic appeal, as the materials remain exposed, showcasing their natural beauty within the home. The interior spaces are designed to be warm and inviting, enhanced by contrasting shades of charred timber and stone flooring.
A Radiance That Changes
The exterior cladding, meticulously crafted from narrow timber planks with a sleek slate roof, plays a crucial role in the house’s design. The choice of natural slate shingles allows the building to reflect sunlight in a unique way, creating an enchanting visual effect that shifts depending on the viewer's position.
Krūmiņa notes, "There were countless modeling iterations to capture the right movement - one that resonated with the site, context, and program." This continuous play of light and shadow offers a dynamic experience reminiscent of the ebb and flow of coastal life.
Functional Spaces That Foster Connection
At the heart of the Pāvilosta House lies a spacious living area, which encourages social interaction and connection among its occupants. The layout is thoughtfully arranged, with four guest bedrooms situated in its narrower end, ensuring privacy without compromising on community spaces. Furthermore, large sliding glass doors connect the interior seamlessly to a garden area, inviting the stunning coastal landscape inside.
The Emotional Connection of Design
Beyond aesthetics, the Pāvilosta House reflects a deep sense of place. The architectural decisions made by Made thoughtfully correspond to the emotional resonance of living in such a vibrant coastal town. As owners enjoy their time in this breathtaking space, they are constantly reminded of the powerful forces of nature that have shaped not only their home but the very environment around it.
