Learning from History: The Sydney School’s Influence
The Sydney School revolutionized residential architecture starting in the 1950s by merging timeless modernist forms with the unique features of Sydney's topography, characterized by steep sandstone sites and sweeping harbor views. CO–AP’s design draws on this illustrious movement, not merely as a historical reference but as a direct influence shaping their architectural narrative.
As Will Fung, co-director of CO-AP states, revisiting the Sydney School was essential for adapting to the challenges presented by this challenging site, adorned with large, mature angophora trees. The house aligns itself seamlessly in the landscape, mirroring the organic forms that characterize this architectural lineage.
Blending Beauty and Functionality
From the solid concrete base, a nod to the client's admiration for Brutalism, to the light metal roof adorned with dormer windows, every detail of the Beauty Point House is meticulously crafted. The color palette is inspired by the very trees housing the residence; the cool greys of the concrete juxtaposed with the deeper maroons and highlights of red reflect the natural environment. This thoughtful choice not only enhances the house's visual appeal but also solidifies its connection to its surroundings.
