Reviving a Victorian Jewel: The Transformation of Kesterson House
The Kesterson House, a grand Victorian residence nestled in the rich cultural tapestry of St Kilda, has undergone an impressive resurrection by the talented architects at Bunston. Originally built in the 1870s, this historic home witnessed a dramatic metamorphosis from its previous life as an architectural office back into a vibrant family abode. The renovation, characterized by a distinctive blend of old-world charm and modern aesthetics, has readied Kesterson House for its next chapter as a cherished family home.
The Journey Designed for Love and Functionality
Zac Bunston, principal architect, recalls the project’s swift nine-month timeline that brought this transformative vision to life. "Many first projects face significant hiccups, but we experienced a process that many could only dream of," Zac reflects. The journey wasn’t without its challenges, however; unexpected issues were uncovered during renovation that necessitated extensive restoration works. Regular and open communication with the clients, combined with the dedication of builder Robin Riotto of Barkers Burke Construction, became the linchpin for their successful collaboration, forging a happy and transparent relationship.
A Home Reflecting Its Surroundings
The design choices throughout Kesterson House brilliantly decree respect for its environment and heritage. The deep-green joinery draws inspiration from the Boston ivy gracefully adorning the home’s rear facade, merging nature with architecture. The decision to reposition the kitchen to the previously dark center of the home fosters a more inviting and family-friendly atmosphere, connected seamlessly to a newly-reimagined living space that encourages togetherness.
Balancing Past and Present
The renovation adds only a meter to Kesterson House’s footprint, adhering closely to the original structure's integrity. Repurposed materials—like bricks, bluestone steppers, and even pendant lights—have been thoughtfully incorporated to maintain the home’s character while minimizing environmental waste. The delicate balance of using what was already present in imaginative ways demonstrates a respect for the home’s original spirit while achieving modern functionality.
The Heart of the Home: Kitchen and Living Areas
The heart of Kesterson House lies within its new kitchen and living areas, illuminated by a stunning 7.5-meter-long skylight that fosters a connection between old and new. This feature animates the space with shifting natural light, creating an ever-changing ambiance that enhances daily living. The light-colored kitchen showcases dark stone accents, hand-patinaed steel features, and vibrant, clay-colored joinery by Fenn Interiors, inviting exploration and interaction.
Unique Design Elements Reflecting Client Personality
One of the most memorable features of the home is undoubtedly the guest powder room. This space is adorned with Ancient Muir tartan wallpaper, a bold tribute to the family’s Scottish heritage. Zac laughingly states that it’s a reflection of the clients’ spirited personalities, transforming an often-overlooked area into a conversation starter for guests. This daring design choice symbolizes the home’s overall ethos, showcasing joyful creativity and a deep connection to family history.
Creating a Relaxing Retreat
The upstairs was reconfigured to integrate a serene ensuite that's described by the clients as a “retreat” in itself. Utilizing Tiberio stone, this space echoes the natural colors and textures found throughout the home, creating an inviting oasis away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. With the careful selection of materials and layouts, every corner of Kesterson House tells a story, combining the past’s nostalgia with a foundation for future memories.
As Kesterson House stands today, it is a shining example of how thoughtful design can reclaim and celebrate heritage while creating a space where modern families can thrive. With its rich historical influences blended beautifully into contemporary living, this architectural masterpiece not only honors its past but also reverberates with the laughter and life of its current inhabitants.
