Odami Brings a Sense of Choreography to Toronto's Retail Space
In the heart of Toronto’s Bayview Village Shopping Centre, the design studio Odami has redefined the shopping experience for Andrews, a womenswear retailer, through a transformative blend of architecture and interior design. This ambitious project was not just about aesthetics; it focused on creating a flow within the substantial 5,500-square-foot space that invites exploration.
Redefining Retail Through Innovative Design
The Bayview Village Shopping Centre, established in the 1960s, was engineered to accommodate a growing residential community. In their overhaul, Odami faced a unique challenge due to the store's interior nestled away from natural light. To compensate for this, they incorporated oversized light panels that instantaneously uplift the ambiance, bobbing between intriguing and inviting. “The store is located inside of a mall, so you don't get that dynamic of the natural light shifting the mood of the space throughout the day,” expressed the Odami team.
A Neutral Palette to Highlight Elegance
Adopting a neutral, tone-on-tone color palette allows the meticulously selected products to take center stage. Each display built from materials like Calacatta Rosenoir marble and sand-toned leather creates a visual language that is both elegant and functional. These surfaces don’t just serve a purpose; they engage customers, inviting them to touch and explore. “We wanted to enact a rich, tangible atmosphere that would simultaneously recede into the background in service of the shop's main feature, the clothing,” said the design team.
Creating Intimacy in a Spacious Environment
Odami's approach to the layout is notably innovative. By deploying U-shaped hanging rails and varied podium heights, they bolstered the experience of browsing. The design creates distinct areas, each operating like a mini boutique rather than a conventional department store, encouraging customers to interact with the merchandise in a more personal manner. The strategic placement of lighting not only highlights key items but also adds an artistic flair, transforming the store into a gallery of fashion.
Beyond Aesthetics: Crafting an Experience
It’s clear that Odami doesn't just focus on aesthetics; they craft an experience. The studio embraces the idea that retail spaces should enchant as much as they serve. Their design features overlapping volumes that instill a sense of choreography, creating a flow where shoppers can organically navigate the space. “These multipurpose elements cascade in and out of one another, coalescing as expansive display plinths, comfortable seating, and integrated storage,” the team explained. This engagement leverages a rich interaction between the products and the customers, ensuring a memorable retail experience.
The Broader Implications of Interior Design in Retail
This project reveals not just the possibilities in Toronto but serves as case study for global trends in retail design. As bricks-and-mortar stores face increasing competition from online shopping, it’s becoming imperative for retailers to offer an experience that cannot be replicated digitally. Innovative spaces like Andrews prepare retailers for an evolving market where design can be a differentiating factor.
